Q7 / 222 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Physics · Wave Optics

Two identical narrow slits S1 and S2 are illuminated by the light of a wavelength λ  from a point source P.

Figure

If, as shown in the diagram above, the light is then allowed to fall on a screen, and if n is a positive integer, the condition for destructive interference at Q is

  • A
    l⁡ 1 - l⁡ 2 = 2 n + 1 λ / 2
  • B
    l⁡ 3 - l⁡ 4 = 2 n + 1 λ / 2
  • C
    l⁡ 1 + l⁡ 2 - l⁡ 3 + l⁡ 4 = n λ
  • Correct answer
    D
    l⁡ 1 + l⁡ 3 - l⁡ 2 + l⁡ 4 = 2 n + 1 λ / 2

Solution

Path difference = l⁡ 1 + l⁡ 3 - l⁡ 2 + l⁡ 4           ...(i)

for destructive interference

Path difference = 2 n + 1 λ / 2                   ...(ii)

l⁡ 1 + l⁡ 3 - l⁡ 2 + l⁡ 4 = 2 n + 1 λ / 2

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
