Q13 / 160 · TS EAMCET 2022 (18 Jul Shift 1) · Chemistry

The pH of pure water at 80°C is

  • A
    7.0
  • B
    ∞
  • C
    >7.0
  • Correct answer
    D
    <7.0

Solution

At  25°C, the value of the ionic product of water is10-14. The ionic product of water is defined as

Kw=H+OH-⇒10-14=H+OH-For pure water H+=OH-So H+=10-7Thus the pH=7

Since the degree of ionization is proportional to temperature, the value of the ionic product of water increases with increase in temperature. So, the ionic product will increase at a temperature more than 25°C
Therefore, at 80°C, the ionic product will increase and so the hydrogen ion concentration will increase and thus, the pH will become less than 7.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
