Q36 / 87 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Mathematics · Functions

Let f:R→R be a function defined as fx=x2-6x2+2, then f is

  • A
    one-one but not onto
  • B
    one-one and onto
  • C
    onto but not one-one
  • Correct answer
    D
    neither one-one nor onto

Solution

Since, fx=f-x
∴f is not one-one.
Let, y∈R. Then, fx=y⇒y=x2-6x2+2
⇒x2=6+2y1-y
For x to be real, 6+2y1-y≥0
and 1-y≠0⇒y+3y-1≤0 and y≠1
⇒-3≤y<1
∴ Range of f=-3,1⊂R
∴ f is not onto

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
