Q81 / 160 · AP EAMCET 2021 (19 Aug Shift 2) · Mathematics

Given two fixed points A(-2,1) and B(3,0), find the locus of a point P which moves such that the angle ∠APB is always a right angle.

  • A
    x2+y2+x+y+6=0
  • Correct answer
    B
    x2+y2−x−y−6=0
  • C
    x+y+6=0
  • D
    2x2+2y2−2x−2y+1=0

Solution

Let, the coordinates of point Ph, k

Given, points A-2, 1 and B3, 0,

So, the slope of AP is (Say m1) k-1h+2,

and, the slope of BP is (Say m2 )k-0h-3=kh-3

As, ∠APB=90°

Hence, m1m2=-1

k-1h+2×kh-3=-1 ⇒ k2-kh2+2h-3h-6=-1 ⇒k2-kh2-h-6=-1

k2-k=-h2-h-6 ⇒ k2+h2-k-h-6=0

So, replace h, k→x, y, in order to obtain the locus.

Hence, the locus of point P is x2+y2-x-y-6=0

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
