Find the wrong statement form the following about the equation of stationary wave given by Y=0.04cos⁡πxsin⁡50πt m where t is in second. Then for the stationary wave.

  • Correct answer
    A
    Time Period = 0.02s
  • B
    Wavelength = 2 m
  • C
    Velocity = 50 m/s
  • D
    Amplitude = 0.02 m

Solution

Key Idea – The displacement of a wave in term of time period is given by
y=Asin2πtT-xλ
This equation in terms of speed of wave (v),
Becomes y=Asin2πλvt-x
The given equation of wave is
y=0.04cos⁡πxsin⁡50πt
=0.02sin⁡50πt+πx+0.02sin⁡50πt-πx
∵2sinA.cosB=sin⁡A+B.cos⁡A-B
Thus, the given wave is the combination of two waves,
y1=0.02sin⁡50πt+πxin-vex-direction
and y2=0.02sin⁡50πt-πx (in + ve x-direction)
Comparing them with the general equation of wave asin⁡ωt+kx , we get
Amplitude, a = 0.02m
Time period, T = 2π50π=125=0.04s
Wavelength, λ=2ππ=2m
Velocity, v = 50π×λ2π
=1002=50ms-1
So, option (a) is wrong.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
