Q43 / 102 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Chemistry · Ionic Equilibrium

An aqueous solution contains an unknown concentration of Ba2+ . When 50 mL of a 1 M solution of Na2SO4 is added BaSO4 just begins to precipitate. The final volume is 500 mL. The solubility product of BaSO4 is 1×10-10 . What is the original concentration of Ba2+ ?

  • A
    1.0×10-10M
  • B
    5×10-9M
  • C
    2×10-9M
  • Correct answer
    D
    1.1×10-9M

Solution

Ba2+=10-9 M (in 500 mL solution)

SO42- in 500 mL solution will be

50×1=M×500

M =0.1

Ba2+450 mL+Na2SO450 mL, 1M→BaSO4+2Na+

KspBaSO4=Ba2+SO42-

10-10=Ba2+×0.1

Now, we have to calculate Ba2+ in original solution (450 mL)

10-9×500=450×M

M=10-9×500450=109×10-9=1.11×10-9M

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
