Q10 / 90 · JEE Main 2016 (09 Apr Online) · Chemistry

5 L of an alkane requires 25 L of oxygen for its complete combustion. If all volumes are measured at constant temperature and pressure, the alkane is

  • A
    Isobutane
  • B
    Ethane
  • C
    Butane
  • Correct answer
    D
    Propane

Solution

Combustion of Hydrocarbon,

CxHy+x+y4O2→x CO2+y2H2O

∴ n∝v (P,T=Constant)

for 1 mole of CxHy=x+y4, O2 required

for 5 L of CxHy=x+y4 5 L, O2 required

∴ ratio of alkane and O2 is 5/25

So, x+y45=25

    x+y4=5,

which is satisfied by C3H8.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
