$\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{3}+\mathrm{HNO}_{3} \stackrel{675 \mathrm{~K}}{\longrightarrow}$

  • A
    $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{NO}_{2}$
  • Correct answer
    B
    $\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{CH}_{2} \mathrm{NO}_{2}+\mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{NO}_{2}$
  • C
    $2 \mathrm{CH}_{3} \mathrm{NO}_{2}$
  • D
    $\mathrm{CH}_{2}=\mathrm{CH}_{2}$

Solution

Aliphatic nitro compounds are prepared by vapour phase nitration of alkanes at 693 $793 \mathrm{~K}$, under pressure. Alkanes though less reactive do undergo nitration to give a mixture of nitro alkanes resulting through cleavage of carbon-carbon bond alongwith oxidation product like $\mathrm{CO}_{2}, \mathrm{NO}_{2}, \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ etc. Figure

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
