Q140 / 170 · Manipal (MET) 2016 · Physics

Two coils each of self-inductance $L$ are connected in parallel. If they are separated by a large distance, then what will be the self-inductance of combination?

  • A
    $\frac{L}{4}$
  • Correct answer
    B
    $\frac{L}{2}$
  • C
    $L$
  • D
    $2 L$

Solution

In parallel combination, the resultant inductance $L_P$, $\frac{1}{L_P}=\frac{1}{L_1}+\frac{1}{L_2}$ $=\frac{1}{L}+\frac{1}{L}=\frac{2}{L}$ $\Rightarrow \quad L_P=\frac{L}{2}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
