Q23 / 160 · AP EAMCET 2014 · Chemistry

The oxide of a metal contains $40 \%$ of oxygen. The valency of metal is 2 . What is the atomic weight of metal?

  • Correct answer
    A
    $24$
  • B
    $13$
  • C
    $40$
  • D
    $36$

Solution

$\because 40 \mathrm{~g}$ of oxygen is combined with $=60 \mathrm{~g}$ of metal $$ \begin{array}{r} \therefore 8 \mathrm{~g} \text { of oxygen will be combined with }=\frac{60 \times 8}{40} \\ =12 \mathrm{~g} \text { of metal } \end{array} $$ $\therefore$ Equivalent weight of metal $=12$ Now, Atomic weight $=$ Equivalent weight $\times$ valency $$ =12 \times 2=24 $$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
