Q28 / 54 · JEE Advanced 2018 (Paper 1) · Mathematics

The number of real solutions of the equation sin-1⁡∑i=1∞xi+1-x∑i=1∞x2i=π2-cos-1⁡∑i=1∞ -x2i-∑i=1∞-xi lying in the interval -12,12 is____.
(Here, the inverse trigonometric functions sin-1⁡x and cos-1⁡x assume values in -π2,π2 and 0,π
respectively.)

Correct answer: 2

Solution

∑i=1∞xi+1=x21-x
∑i=1∞x2i=x2-x
∑i=1∞-x2i=-x2+x
∑i=1∞-xi=-x1+x
For the given equation to have real solutions
∑i=1∞xi+1-x∑i=1∞x2i=∑i=1∞-x2i-∑i=1∞-xi
x21-x-x22-x=-x2+x+x1+x
xx3+2x2+5x-2=0

⇒x=0 is a solution,also

    fx=x3+2x2+5x-2⇒f'(x)=3x2+4x+5       D=16-60=-44<0⇒f is strictly increasing
and ∵ f12.f-12<0
Hence two solution exist.

Hence, the correct answer is 2.
