Q25 / 77 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Mathematics · Statistics

The mean and standard deviation of 100 observations were calculated as 40 and 5.1, respectively by a student who took by mistake 50 instead of 40 for one observation, then the correct standard deviation is

  • A
    4
  • B
    6
  • C
    3
  • Correct answer
    D
    5

Solution

Standard deviation σ=1n∑i=1nxi2-1n2∑i=1nxi2
=1n∑i=1nxi2-x-2

 ⇒5.1=1100×Incorrect∑i=1nxi2-402
or, 26.01=1100× Incorrect ∑i=1nxi2-1600
Therefore,
Incorrect ∑i=1nxi2=100(26.01+1600)=162601

Correct mean, x ¯=3990100=39.9
Now, Correct ∑i=1nxi2= Incorrect ∑i=1nxi2-502+402
=162601-2500+1600=161701
Therefore correct standard deviation
=Correct∑xi2n-Correctmean2
=161701100-39.92=1617.01-1592.01=25=5

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
