The mass of a box measured by a grocer's balance is $2.3 \mathrm{~kg}$. Two gold pieces of masses $20.15 \mathrm{~g}$ and $20.17 \mathrm{~g}$ are added to the box. What is the total mass of the box and the difference in the masses of the pieces to correct significant figures?
- A$2.34 \mathrm{~kg}, 0 \mathrm{~g}$
- Correct answerB$2.3 \mathrm{~kg}, 0.02 \mathrm{~g}$
- C$2.34 \mathrm{~kg}, 0.02 \mathrm{~g}$
- D$2.3 \mathrm{~kg}, 0 \mathrm{~g}$
Solution
$\begin{aligned} \text { Total mass }= & 2.3 \mathrm{~kg}+0.02015 \mathrm{~kg} \\ & +0.02017 \mathrm{~kg} \\ = & 2.34032 \mathrm{~kg}=2.3 \mathrm{~kg}\end{aligned}$
Difference of mass of the gold pieces
$=20.17 \mathrm{~g}-20.15 \mathrm{~g}=0.02 \mathrm{~g}$
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
