The locus of a point P which moves such that the sum of its distances from two perpendicular lines is equal to 1 is a

  • Correct answer
    A
    Square
  • B
    Circle
  • C
    Straight line
  • D
    set of four parallel lines

Solution

Point P moves such that the sum of its distances from two perpendicular lines is equal to one.

Let the perpendicular lines are x-axis and y-axis.

L1:x=0,  L2:y=0 and Px,y then the sum of distances of point P from L1 & L2 =x+y=1

So, four equations of lines are possible which are

x+y=1x≥0,y≥0-x+y=1x≤0,y≥0-x-y=1x≤0,y≤0x-y=1x≥0,y≤0

Figure

Hence, these lines will form a square.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
