Q24 / 60 · JEE Advanced 2013 (Paper 2) · Mathematics

The function fx=2x+x+2-x+2-2x has a local minimum or a local maximum at x=

  • Correct answer
    A
    -2
  • Correct answer
    B
    -23
  • C
    2
  • D
    23

Solution

fx=2x+x+2-x+2-2x

CASE 1:

For x≤-2,

x=-x and x+2=-x+2 (∵ x, x+2<0)

⇒ f(x)=-3x-2-x-2

=-3x-2+(x-2) (∵ x-2<0)

=-2x-4 ...(1)

CASE 2:

For -2<x≤0,

x=-x ∵ x<0 & x+2=(x+2) (∵ x+2>0)

⇒ f(x)=-2x+(x+2)-(x+2)+2x=-x+2-3x+2

=-x+2+(3x+2), -2<x≤-23-x+2-(3x+2), -23<x≤0

=2x+4, -2<x≤-23-4x, -23<x≤0 ...(2)

CASE 3:

For x>0,

x=x & x+2=(x+2)

⇒ f(x)=2x+(x+2)-(x+2)-2x=3x+2--x+2

=3x+2-(-x+2), 0<x≤23x+2+(-x+2), 2<x

=4x, 0<x≤22x+4, 2<x ...(3)

From (1), (2) & (3), we get
f(x)=-2x-4,x≤-22x+4,-2<x≤-23-4x,-23<x≤04x,0<x≤22x+4,x>2

Figure
From graph, y=f(x) has local minima at x=-2, 0 and local maxima at x=-23.

Hence, the correct answer is options: 'A', 'B'.
