Suppose y=yx be the solution curve to the differential equation dydx-y=2-e-x such that limx→∞yx is finite. If a and b are respectively the x- and y-intercept of the tangent to the curve at x=0, then the value of a-4b is equal to _______.

Correct answer: 3

Solution

Given,

dydx-y=2-e-x

Linear differential equation,

So, I.F. =e-∫dx=e-x

Now solution of differential equation is given by

y×IF=∫2-e-x×IFdx

⇒ye-x=∫2-e-xe-xdx

⇒ye-x=∫2e-x-e-2xdx

⇒ye-x=-2e-x+e-2x2+C

⇒y=-2+e-x2+Cex

Given limx→∞y is finite

So, limx→∞-2+e-x2+C·ex→finite

This is possible only when C=0

Hence y=yx=-2+e-x2

Now finding the slope dydx=-12e-x

dydxx=0=-12=m,y0=-2+12=-32

Now equation of tangent will be,

y+32=-12x-0

⇒x+2y=-3

x-intercept a=-3, y-intercept b=-32

So, a-4b=-3+6=3

Hence, the correct answer is 3.
