Q150 / 150 · MHT CET 2019 (Shift 2) · Physics

P and Q are two non-zero vectors inclined to each other at an angle 'θ'. ‘p’ and ‘q’ are unit vectors along P and Q respectively. The component of Q in the direction of Q will be

  • Correct answer
    A
    P.Q
  • B
    P×QP
  • C
    P.QQ
  • D
    p.q

Solution

Let two vectors P and Q are represented by graph as below
Figure
Here, Qp is a vector in the direction of P.
Then, from the right angle triangle, we get
cosθ=QpQ ….(i)
⇒Qp=Qcosθ
Also, cosθ=P.QPQ⇒QpQ=P.QPQ
⇒Qp=P.QP ….(ii)
As given that, P is the unit vector along P, then
P^=PP …(iii)
Putting the value of P from Eq.(iii) to Eq.(ii), we get
Qp=P.Q

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
