Q31 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (31 Jan Shift 2) · Mathematics

Let the mean and standard deviation of marks of class A of 100 students be respectively 40 and α>0, and the mean and standard deviation of marks of class B of n students be respectively 55 and 30-α. If the mean and variance of the marks of the combined class of 100+n students are respectively 50 and 350 , then the sum of variances of classes A and B is

  • Correct answer
    A
    500
  • B
    450
  • C
    650
  • D
    900

Solution

Let the mean is denoted by xi¯, variance by σi2, so standard deviation will be σi, now as per given data we get,

A B A+Bx¯1=40 x¯2=55 x¯=50σ1=α σ2=30-α σ2=350n1=100 n2=n 100+n

So, using the formula of mean in A+B we get,

x¯=100×40+55n100+n=50

⇒  n=200

Now using the formula of variance we get,

σ12=∑xi2100-402=α2

And σ22=∑yi2200-552=30-α2

So, variance of A+B will be,

σ2=∑xi2+∑yi2300-502=3502

⇒3502=1600+α2×100+3025+30-α2×200300-502

⇒α2-40α+300=0

⇒α=10  or 30

And α=30 is not possible

So, σ1+2σ2=2102+202=500

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
