Q54 / 90 · JEE Main 2021 (27 Aug Shift 1) · Mathematics

Let the equation x2+y2+px+(1-p)y+5=0 represent circles of varying radius r∈(0,5]. Then the number of elements in the set S={q:q=p2 and q is an integer} is ___________

Correct answer: 61

Solution

r=p24+1-p24-5

=2p2-2p-192

Since r∈(0,5]

So, 0<2p2-2p-192≤5

0<2p2-2p-19≤100

⇒2p2-2p-19>0   ...i

For, 2p2-2p-19>0

p=2±4-4×2×-194

=2±1564

⇒p-1+392p-1-392>0....ii

p2=10±392

Also, 2p2-2p-119≤0   ...iii

For, 2p2-2p-119=0

p=2±4-4×2×-1194

=1±2392

⇒p-1+2392p-1-2392≤0...iv

p2=60±2392

So, from ii & iv

⇒p∈1-2392, 1-392∪1+392, 1+2392

⇒p2∈10-392,60-2392∪10+392,60+2392

So, number of integral values of p2 is 61.

Hence, the correct answer is 61.
