Let P be an arbitrary point having sum of the squares of the distance from the planes x+y+z=0, lx-nz=0 and x-2y+z=0 equal to 9 units. If the locus of the point P is x2+y2+z2=9, then the value of l-n is equal to

Correct answer: 0

Solution

The distance of a point x1, y1, z1 from a plane ax+by+cz+d=0 is ax1+by1+cz1+da2+b2+c2.

Given the point P is an arbitrary point such that the sum of the squares of its distance from the planes x+y+z=0, lx-nz=0 and x-2y+z=0 is equal to 9 units.

Let, the point P is α, β, γ, then we have

α+β+γ32+lα-nγl2+n22+α-2β+γ62=9

Thus, the locus can be obtained by replacing α, β, γ by x, y, z and hence the locus is

(x+y+z)23+(lx-nz)2l2+n2+(x-2y+z)26=9

⇒x2+y2+z2+2xy+2yz+2xz3+l2x2+n2z2-2lnxzl2+n2+x2+4y2+z2-4xy-4yz+2xz6=9

⇒x212+l2l2+n2+y2+z212+n2l2+n2+2xz12-nll2+n2-9=0

Since, it is given that the locus is x2+y2+z2=9

⇒12-nll2+n2=0

⇒l2+n2-2nl2l2+n2=0

⇒l-n2=0

⇒l-n=0.

Hence, the correct answer is 0.
