Let the equation of plane passing through the line of intersection of the planes x+2y+az=2 and x−y+z=3 be 5x−11y+bz=6a−1. For c∈ℤ, if the distance of this plane from the point a,−c,c is 2a, then a+bc is equal to

  • A
    2
  • B
    4
  • Correct answer
    C
    -4
  • D
    -2

Solution

Let the equation of plane passing through the intersection of two given planes:

x+2y+az-2+λ(x-y+z-3)=0

⇒x(λ+1)+y(2-λ)+z(a+λ)-2-3λ=0

This is same as 5x-11y+bz=6a-1

λ+15=2-λ-11=a+λb=2+3λ6a-1

⇒-11λ-11=10-5λ

⇒6λ=-21⇒λ=-72

2-λ-11=2+3λ6a-1⇒2+72-11=2-2126a-1⇒-12=-172(6a-1)⇒6a-1=17⇒a=3

2-λ-11=a+λb⇒-12=3-72b

⇒-b2=-12⇒b=1

∴ point (a,-c,c)≡(3,-c,c)

Distance=2a=23

Plane:5 x-11 y+z=17

The distance of the plane from (3,-c,c) is

15+11c+c-17147=23

⇒|12c-2|=14

⇒c=-1,43

c=-1       c∈ℤ

∴a+bc=3+1-1=-4

Hence this is the required option.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
