Let f:ℝ→ℝ be defined as fx=x-1  and g:R→1,-1→ℝ be defined as gx=x2x2-1. Then the function fog is:

  • A
    One-one but not onto
  • B
    onto but not one-one
  • C
    Both one-one and onto
  • Correct answer
    D
    Neither one-one nor onto

Solution

fogx=fgx  =fx2x2+1

=x2x2+1-1  =x2-x2-1x2+1 =-1x2+1

We know that, 0≤x2<∞, ∀x∈R

⇒1≤x2+1<∞, ∀x∈R ⇒1≥1x2+1>0, ∀x∈R  ⇒-1≤-1x2+1<0, ∀x∈R

So, range of fogx is −1, 0⊂R.

 Hence, the function fogx is into function and fog-x=fg-x=-1-x2+1=-1x2+1=fgx

∴  fogx is an even function. So, it is a many one function.

Hence, fogx is neither one-one nor onto function.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
