Q31 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (11 Apr Shift 1) · Mathematics

Let f:2,4→ℝ be a differentiable function such that xlogexf'x+logexfx+fx≥1,x∈2,4 with f2=12 and f4=12.
Consider the following two statements:

(A) fx≤1, for all x∈2,4

(B) fx≥1/8, for all x∈2,4

Then,

  • A
Neither statement (A) nor statement (B) is true
  • B
    Only statement (B) is true
  • Correct answer
    C
Both the statements (A)and (B) are true
  • D
    Only statement (A) is true

Solution

Given,

Domain and range of function,

f:2,4→ℝ

xlogexf'x+logexfx+fx≥1, x∈2,4

⇒xlogexddxfx+logexfxddxx+xfxddxlogex≥1

⇒ddxxlnxfx≥1

⇒ddxxlnxfx≥ddxx

⇒ddxxlnxfx-x≥0

Hence, h(x)=xlnxfx-x is a increasing function,

∴h(x)≥h(2),x∈[2,4]

⇒xlnx×fx-x≥2ln2×f2-2

⇒xlnxf(x)-x≥ln2-2

Similarly, hx≤h4

⇒xlnxfx-x≤ln4-4

So, ln2-2xlnx+1lnx≤f(x)≤ln4-4xlnx+1lnx

Now for x∈2,4

ln4-4xlnx+1lnx≤ln4-42ln2+1ln2=1-1ln2<1

⇒fx≤1 for x∈2,4

Now for x∈2,4

ln2-2xlnx+1lnx≥ln2-24ln4+1ln4=ln2-24ln4+1ln4=18+14ln2>18

Hence, f(x)≥18

Hence both A & B are correct.
Note this question was bonus in Jee Main 2023 April session, as LMVT on f(x)·xlnx can't be satisfied.

Hence, no such f(x) exist.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
