Let a≠b be two non-zero real numbers. Then the number of elements in the set X=z∈C:Reaz2+bz=a and Rebz2+az=b is equal to

  • Correct answer
    A
    0
  • B
    1
  • C
    3
  • D
    2

Solution

Given,

X=z∈C:Reaz2+bz=a and Rebz2+az=b

Now, let z=x+iy

So,  Reaz2+bz=a

⇒Reax+iy2+bx+iy=a

⇒Reax2-y2+2ixy+bx+iy=a

⇒ax2-y2+bx=a    ... i

And,  Rebz2+az=b

⇒Rebx+iy2+ax+iy=b

⇒Rebx2-y2+2ixy+ax+iy=b

⇒ bx2-y2+ax=b   ... ii

From i and ii, i-ii we get,

x2-y2a-b-xa-b=a-b

⇒ x2-y2-x=1  ... iii

From i and ii, i+ii

x2-y2+x-1a+b=0 (Note: here a+b≠0 is considered but it is not clear from the question)

⇒x2-y2+x-1=0  ... iv

Now from iii and iv we get,

x=0, y2=-1 (No solution)

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
