Let a→,b→ and c→ be three non zero vectors such that b→·c→=0 and a→×(b→×c→)=b→-c→2. If d→ be a vector such that b→·d→=a→·b→, then (a→×b→)·(c→×d→) is equal to

  • A
    34

  • B
    12

  • C
    -14
  • Correct answer
    D
    14

Solution

Given,

a→×b→×c→=b→-c→2

Using the vector triple cross product we have,

a→×b→×c→=a→·c→b→-a→·b→c→

So, (a→·c→)b→-(a→·b→)c→=b→-c→2

On comparing both sides we get,

a→·c→=12,a→·b→=12

∵ b→·d→ = a→·b→

∴b→·d→=12

Using vector cross-product formulae we have

(a→×b→)·(c→×d→)=a→·(b→×(c→×d→))

=a→·((b→·d→)c→-(b→·c→)d→)      ∵ b→·c→=0

=(a→·c→)(b→·d→)=12×12=14

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
