Let π1 be the plane passing through the point 2i^-j^+k^ and perpendicular to the vector ai^+2j^-3k^ and π2 be the plane passing through the point i^+2j^-k^ and perpendicular to the vector i^-2j^+k^. If θ is the angle between the planes π1 and π2 and cosθ=-37, then the integral value of a is

  • A
    -2
  • B
    -1
  • C
    2
  • Correct answer
    D
    1

Solution

Given,

π1 be the plane passing through the point 2i^-j^+k^ and perpendicular to the vector ai^+2j^-3k^

So normal vector n→1=ai^+2j^-3k^

And π2 be the plane passing through the point i^+2j^-k^ and perpendicular to the vector i^-2j^+k^,

So nomal vector to the plane will be n→2=i^-2j^+k^

Now θ is the angle between the planes π1 and π2 is given by,

cosθ=-37

⇒n→1.n→2n→1.n→2=-37

⇒ai^+2j^-3k^.i^-2j^+k^ai^+2j^-3k^.i^-2j^+k^=-37

⇒a-4-3a2+4+9.12+22+12=-37

⇒a-7a2+13.6=-37

⇒a-72a2+13×6=37

Then the integral value of a from options is 1

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
