Q147 / 160 · AP EAMCET 2021 (19 Aug Shift 1) · Physics

In a diffraction pattern due to a single slit of width 'a', the first minimum is observed at an angle 30° when light of wavelength 500 nm is incident on the slit. The first secondary maximum is observed at an angle of

  • A
    sin−1⁡12
  • Correct answer
    B
    sin−1⁡34
  • C
    sin−1⁡14
  • D
    sin−1⁡23

Solution

Given that for slit of width a the first minimum form at θ=30°, the wavelength of light is 500 nm

Using Bragg's law of diffraction, nλ=asinθ, here n is the whole number and for the first minimum n=1

⇒1λ=asin30°⇒a=2λ

For the first secondary maximum, n+12λ=asinθ' where n=1

⇒32λ=asinθ'⇒32λ=2λsinθ'⇒θ'=sin-134

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
