If a circle x-12+y2=r2 touches the ellipse x2+4y2=16 internally, then r=

  • Correct answer
    A
    113
  • B
    113
  • C
    152
  • D
    2

Solution

Given circle is x-12+y2=r2....i

Here, centre of circle is 1,0 &radius=r.

Given ellipse is  x2+4y2=16 i.e. x216+y24=1

Comparing with x2a2+y2b2=1

a=4, b=2

Also given that the circle touches the ellipse internally as shown in figure.

Figure

Let any point on ellipse be  P4cosθ, 2sinθ

∴Equation of normal of ellipse

ax.secθ-by.cosecθ=a2-b2

∴4x.secθ-2y.cosecθ=12

And it will pass through the centre of the circle 1,0

∴4×1.secθ-0=12

⇒secθ=3

⇒cosθ=13

And sinθ=1-19=223

Now, the point is  4cosθ, 2sinθ≡43, 423

Radius r=Distance between 1,0 & 43,223

 =1-432+0-4232

=19+329

=113

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
