If 2x-y+1=0 is a tangent to the hyperbola x2a2-y216=1 , then which of the following CANNOT be sides of a right angled triangle?

  • Correct answer
    A
    a,4, 2
  • Correct answer
    B
    2a, 8, 1
  • C
    2a, 4, 1
  • Correct answer
    D
    a, 4, 1

Solution

The line y=mx+c is tangent to hyperbola x2a2-y2b2=1,, if c2=a2m2-b2

∴   12=4a2-16 ⇒  a2=174

⇒    a=172

For 2a, 4, 1 , sides are 17, 4, 1 (⇒ Right angled triangle)

For 2a, 8, 1 , sides are 17, 8, 1 (⇒Triangle is not possible)

For a, 4, 1 , sides are 172, 4, 1 (⇒Triangle is not possible)

For a, 4, 2 , sides are 172, 4, 2 (⇒Triangle exist but not right angled)

Hence, the correct answer is options: 'A', 'B', 'D'.
