Q17 / 75 · JEE Main 2026 (22 January Shift 1) · Chemistry
Given below are two statements:
Statement I: The Henry's law constant $\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{H}}$ is constant with respect to variations in solution's concentration over the range for which the solution is ideally dilute.
Statement II: $\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{H}}$ does not differ for the same solute in different solvents.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

Statement II: $\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{H}}$ does not differ for the same solute in different solvents.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- AStatement I is false but Statement II is true
- BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false
- Correct answerCStatement I is true but Statement II is false
- DBoth Statement I and Statement II are true
Solution
Statement I: $K_H$ is constant with respect to concentration variations in ideally dilute solutions.
TRUE - Henry's law constant depends only on temperature and the nature of the solute-solvent interaction. For ideally dilute solutions, $K_H$ = $P_\text{gas}/x_\text{solute}$ remains constant regardless of solute concentration within the dilute range.
Statement II: $K_H$ does not differ for the same solute in different solvents.
FALSE - Henry's law constant is solvent-dependent. The same gas or solute has different $K_H$ values in different solvents at the same temperature because the solute-solvent interactions differ. For example, CO₂ dissolves differently in water versus ethanol, giving different $K_H$ values.
Therefore, Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
TRUE - Henry's law constant depends only on temperature and the nature of the solute-solvent interaction. For ideally dilute solutions, $K_H$ = $P_\text{gas}/x_\text{solute}$ remains constant regardless of solute concentration within the dilute range.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
