Q72 / 125 · BITSAT 2018 · Mathematics

For which interval the given function fx=-2x3-9x2-12x+1 is decreasing?

  • A
    -2,∞
  • B
    -2,-1
  • C
    -∞,-1
  • Correct answer
    D
    -∞,-2 or -1,∞

Solution

Given, fx=-2x3-9x2-12x+1

f'x=-6x2-18x-12

To be decreasing f'x<0

⇒-6x2-18x-12<0

⇒x2+3x+2>0

⇒x+2x+1>0

Therefore, either x<-2 or x>-1

x∈-1,∞ or -∞,-2

Hence, option (d) correct.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
