Q59 / 180 · COMEDK 2018 · Chemistry

For a reaction, $A+B \longrightarrow C+D$, If the concentration of $A$ is doubled without altering the concentration of $B$, the rate gets double(d)If the concentration of $B$ is increased by nine times without altering the concentration of $A$, the rate gets triple(d)The order of the reaction is

  • A
    2
  • B
    1
  • Correct answer
    C
    $\frac{3}{2}$
  • D
    $\frac{4}{3}$

Solution

Let rate expression, $r=k[A]^{x}[B]^{y}$ If, $\left[A_{1}\right]=[2 \mathrm{~A}]$, then $r_{1}=2 r$ $\therefore \quad x=1$ If, $\left[B_{2}\right]=[9 B]$, then $r_{2}=3 r$ $\therefore \quad y=\frac{1}{2}$ Rate expression, $r=k[A][B]^{1 / 2}$ [By Eq. (i)] $\therefore$ Order $=1+\frac{1}{2}=\frac{3}{2}$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
