Q74 / 90 · JEE Main 2023 (06 Apr Shift 2) · Physics

Figure shows a part of an electric circuit. The potentials at points a, b and c are 30 V, 12 V and 2 V respectively. The current through the 20 Ω resistor will be,

Figure

  • A
    1.0 A
  • Correct answer
    B
    0.4 A
  • C
    0.6 A
  • D
    0.2 A

Solution

Figure

Let the potential be x V at the junction.

By using V=IR we get,

30-x=10i1x-12=20i2x-2=30i3

By using Kirchhoff's law,

i1=i2+i3

⇒30-x10+12-x20+2-x30=0⇒90-3x+18-1.5x+2-x30=0

⇒x=20 V

The current through the 20 Ω resistor is

i2=30-1220 A

⇒i2=820A=0.4 A

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
