Q36 / 180 · JIPMER 2016 · Chemistry
$\left[\mathrm{CuCl}_4\right]^{2-}$ exists while $\left[\mathrm{Cul}_4\right]^{2-}$ does not exist, because
- Correct answerA$\mathrm{I}^{-}$is stronger reductant than $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$
- B$\mathrm{I}^{-}$is weaker reductant than $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$
- C$\mathrm{I}^{-}$is stronger oxidant than $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$
- DNone of the above
Solution
AsI- is stronger reducing agent, i.e., reductant than $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$ and reduces $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ into Cul and itself is oxidised into $\mathrm{I}_2$. $\mathrm{Cl}^{-}$is not that much strong reducing agent and does not reduce $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$.
Therefore, $\left[\mathrm{CuCl}_4\right]^{2-}$ exists but $\left[\mathrm{CuCl}_4\right]^{2-}$ does not.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
