Q29 / 155 · WBJEE 2018 · Chemistry
At room temperature, the reaction between
water and fluorine produces
- A$\mathrm{HF}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{2}$
- B$\mathrm{HF}, \mathrm{O}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{F}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{2}$
- Correct answerC$F^{-}, O_{2}$ and $H^{+}$
- DHOF and HF
Solution
At room temperature, the reaction between water and fluorine produces $\mathrm{F}^{-}, \mathrm{O}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ Fluorine, being non-polar molecule, readily dissolves with water and forms mixture of oxygen and ozone as shown below
$$
\begin{array}{l}
2 \mathrm{F}_{2}+2 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow 4 \mathrm{HF}+\mathrm{O}_{2} \\
3 \mathrm{F}_{2}+3 \mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow 6 \mathrm{HF}+\mathrm{O}_{3}
\end{array}
$$
HF exist as $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{F}^{-}$ in a solution.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
