Assertion: The zero velocity of a particle at any instant always implies zero acceleration at that instant

Reason: A body is momentarily at rest when reverses its direction of motion.

The correct option among the following is

  • A
Assertion is true, Reason is true and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
  • B
Assertion is true, Reason is true but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
  • C
Assertion is true but Reason is false
  • Correct answer
    D
Assertion is false but Reason is true

Solution

When a body reverses its direction, it comes to rest for a moment e.g. a body thrown upward at the topmost point. Hence, the reason statement is correct. In the same example, at the topmost point the velocity of the particle is zero but, the acceleration of the particle is equal to the acceleration due to gravity i.e. it is non zero. Hence, the assertion statement is false.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
