Q125 / 160 · TS EAMCET 2022 (18 Jul Shift 2) · Physics

A river has a steady speed of v. A man swims upstream at a distance of d and swims back to the starting point in total time t. The man can swim at a speed of 2v in still water. If the time taken by the man in still water is t0 to complete the same length of swim, then tt0 is

  • A
    12
  • B
    32
  • C
    34
  • Correct answer
    D
    43

Solution

The total distance travelled by the man will be 2d. Therefore, the time taken by the man in still water will be,

t0=2d2v=dv

When the man is going downstream its speed will be equal to

v1=vm+vr=3v

Therefore, the time taken to go the distance d will be,

t1=dv1=d3v

When the man is going upstream its speed will be equal to

v2=vm-vr=v

Therefore, the time taken to go the distance d will be,

t2=dv2=dv

Therefore the total time taken is

t=t1+t2=4d3v⇒tt0=43

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
