Q94 / 180 · AIIMS 2004 · Physics

Assertion : A red object appears dark in the yellow light. Reason : The red colour is scattered less.

  • A
If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion
  • Correct answer
    B
If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion
  • C
If assertion is true but reason is false
  • D
If both assertion and reason are false.

Solution

A red object reflects red colour from a light falling on it. Thus when this object is viewed in yellow light then it absorbs all yellow light falling on it and appears dark. From Rayleigh's scattering is inversely proportional to $\lambda^4$. Red colour has largest wavelength; therefore this colour is scattered least as compared to other colours.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
