An object cools from 100°C to 40°C in 10 minutes, when the surrounding temperature is 10°C. Then the time taken by the object to cool from 70°C to 20°C is
[Take ln2=0.7,ln3=1.1,ln6=1.8]

  • A
    30min
  • B
    8.5min
  • C
    22.4min
  • Correct answer
    D
    16.3min

Solution

According to Newton's cooling law, rate of cooling is

dθdt∝θ-θ0

Here, θ=the temperature of the body

θ0=Room temperature(constant)

Let k be the proportionality constant and θ be the temperature.
Therefore,

dθdt=-kθ-θ0⇒∫θ1θ2dθθ-θ0=-k∫0tdt⇒lnθ2-θ0θ1-θ0=kt

Taking ratios,

ln40-10100-10ln20-1070-10=10t2⇒t2=10×ln6ln3=16.3 min

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
