Q10 / 201 · NTA Abhyas (NEET) 2020 · Physics · Atomic Physics

An electron collides with a hydrogen atom in its ground state and excites it to n=3. The energy given to hydrogen atom in this inelastic collision is(neglect the motion of hydrogen atom)

  • A
    10.2 eV
  • Correct answer
    B
    12.1 eV
  • C
    12.5 eV
  • D
    None of these

Solution

The energy taken by hydrogen atom corresponds to its transition from

n= 1 to  n=3 state.

∆E   (given to hydrogen atom)

= 13.61-19

= 13.6×89 = 12.1 eV

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
