Q7 / 107 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Physics · Wave Optics

White light is used to illuminate the two slits in Young's double-slit experiment. The separation between the slits is d and the distance between the slits and screen is D d≪D. At a point on the screen directly in front of one of the slits, certain wavelengths are missing. The missing wavelengths are

  • A
    λ=d2Dn-1
  • Correct answer
    B
    λ=d2D2n-1
  • C
    λ=d2Dn
  • D
    λ=d2Dn

Solution

The nth order dark fringe is at a distance yn from the control zero-order bright fringe where

yn=n+12λDd,  Here, n=0, 1, 2 ......etc.

yn=n-12λDd, Here n=1,2 .......etc.

For the point on the screen directly infront of one of the slits, yn=d2.

So, d2=n-12λDd  ⇒  λ=d2D2n-1

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
