Which of the following statements is incorrect about $\mathrm{G}_0$ phase?

  • Correct answer
    A
    Mitosis occurs after $\mathrm{G}_0$ phase.
  • B
Cell enters $\mathrm{G}_0$ phase due to non-availability of mitogens.
  • C
Cell volume keeps on increasing during this phase.
  • D
Cell metabolism occurs continuously in $\mathrm{G}_0$ phase.

Solution

$G_0$ phase is the stage of inactivation of cell cycle due to non-availability of mitogens and energy rich compounds. The cells in this phase remain metabolically active and usually grow in size assuming particular shape (cell differentiation). Cell enters $\mathrm{G}_0$ phase from a cell cycle checkpoint in the $G_1$ phase. $G_1$ phase checkpoint takes the key decision whether the cell should divide, delay division or enter resting stage. Cells then remain in $G_0$ phase until there is a reason for them to divide.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
