Which of the following reaction produce alkane as the product? Figure

  • A
    I, II, III
  • B
    I, III, IV
  • Correct answer
    C
    I, II, IV
  • D
    II, III, IV

Solution

(I) The mixture of $\mathrm{NaOH}+\mathrm{CaO}$ is called sodalime when it reacts with sodium salt of carboxylic acid, it gives corresponding alkane. The reaction is called decarboxylation of salts of carboxylic acids. (I) $\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{COO}{ }^{+}+\mathrm{NaOH} \underset{\Delta}{\stackrel{\mathrm{CaO}}{\longrightarrow}} \underset{\substack{\text { (Alkane }\}}}{(R-\mathrm{H})}$ (II) Figure
The above reaction is called Clemmensen-reduction. It converts aldehydes and ketones to corresponding alkane. (III) This reaction is used for reduction of alkynes which gives corresponding alkenes. This reaction is used for reduction of alkynes which gives corresponding alkenes. (iv)Figure
Hence, option (3) is the correct answer.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
