Q14 / 160 · AP EAMCET 2018 (23 Apr Shift 2) · Chemistry
Which of the following is not correct corresponding to chemistry of group 14 elements ?
- ALead has no reaction with water due to formation of protective oxide layer
- Correct answerB$\mathrm{GeX}_2$ is more stable than $\mathrm{GeX}_4$
- C$\mathrm{PbX}_2$ is more stable than $\mathrm{PbX}_4$
- DTin on reaction with steam liberates hydrogen.
Solution
Ge is the elements of group 14 (carbon family). In which Ge shows oxidation state +2 and +4 but +4 for Ge is more prominant while, due to sheilding of $s$-electrons by intervening $d$ and $f$-electrons as the number of $d$ and $f$ electrons increases down the group from $\mathrm{Ge}$ to $\mathrm{Pb}$ the inert pair effect becomes more prominent so +4 oxidation state is becomes less stable.
So, the +2 oxidation state of $\mathrm{Pb} X_2$ are more stable.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'B'.
