Q1 / 105 · NTA Abhyas (JEE Main) 2020 · Chemistry · d and f Block Elements

Which of the following is not correct?

  • Correct answer
    A
    Rusting of iron can be stopped by increasing the concentration of CO2 in water
  • B
    Rusting of iron is electrochemical in nature
  • C
    Rusting of iron takes place in moist air
  • D
    Rusting of iron produces hydrated iron (III) oxide

Solution

Rusting of iron is an electrochemical phenomenon in which one spot of iron acts as anode.

Fes→Fe2+aq+2e-

These electrons move through the metal and are taken up by the oxygen already dissolved in water in presence of H+ furnished by H2CO3 , which is formed by the dissolution of CO2g in water. The concentration of H+ depends upon the concentration of CO2 in water.

Cathode O2aq+4H++4e-→2H2Ol

Since increase in the concentration of H+ results in the increase in the rate of the reaction, therefore, rusting of iron occurs quicker, when the concentration of dissolved CO2 in water increases.

Fe2+ so-obtained are further oxidized to Fe2O3 by atmospheric oxygen. Fe2O3 is then hydrated to form rust.

Fe2O3+xH2O→Fe2O3.xH2ORust

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'A'.
