Mitochondria possess their own circular DNA (mtDNA) which can replicate independently. mIDNA can produce its own $m$ RNA and protein and some of the enzymes required for functioning. They can produce new mitochondria by division or binary fission from pre-existing mitochondria. Mitochondria also have their own ribosomes but they are of 70 S type like that of prokaryotes.
