Which of the following has octet around central atom?

  • A
    $\mathrm{PF}_5$
  • B
    $\mathrm{SF}_6$
  • Correct answer
    C
    $\mathrm{CCl}_4$
  • D
    $\mathrm{BF}_3$

Solution

Key Idea Electrons are transferred or shared such that each atom gains an electronic configuration of a noble gas $\left(\mathrm{ns}^2 \mathrm{np}^6\right.$ ) i.e. having 8 outer shell (valency) electrons. This arrangement is called octetrule. An outermost shell which had eight electrons is called octet. Carbon tetrachloride has octet around central atom. The number of bonded electrons in given compounds are as follows $\mathrm{PF}_5\left(10 \mathrm{e}^{-}\right), \mathrm{SF}_6\left(12 \mathrm{e}^{-}\right), \mathrm{CCL}_4\left(8 \mathrm{e}^{-}\right),-\mathrm{BF}_3\left(6 \mathrm{e}^{-}\right)$

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
