Which of the following does not exist?
- A$\left[\mathrm{GeCl}_6\right]^{2-}$
- B$\left[\mathrm{SiF}_6\right]^{2-}$
- Correct answerC$\left[\mathrm{SiCl}_6\right]^2$
- D$\left[\mathrm{Sn}(\mathrm{OH})_6\right]^{2-}$
Solution
$\left[\mathrm{SiCl}_6\right]^{-2}$ does not exist because six large chloride ions can not fit around the smaller $\mathrm{Si}^{4+}$ ion, causing repulsion between ions.
The other species $\left[\mathrm{GeCl}_6\right]^{-2},\left[\mathrm{SiF}_6\right]^{-2},\left[\mathrm{Sn}(\mathrm{OH})_6\right]^{-2}$ exist because of the d- orbitals in $\mathrm{Ge}, \mathrm{Si}, \mathrm{Sn}$.
Hence, the correct answer is option: 'C'.
