Q14 / 125 · BITSAT 2018 · Chemistry

Which of the following diatomic molecules would be stabilised by the removal of an electron?

  • A
    C2
  • B
    CN
  • C
    N2
  • Correct answer
    D
    O2

Solution

In O2, molecule, last two electrons are present in anti bonding
orbitals.
O28+8=16=σ1 s2,σ*1 s2,σ2 s2,σ*2 s2, σ2pz2,π2px2=π2py2,π*2px1=π*2py1
Removal of one electron from the O2, molecule gives O2+ in which the number of anti bonding electrons is one less and hence, BO increases. Thus, removal of one electron from O2 stabilises the molecule.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
