Which among the following species doesn't show disproportionation reaction?

  • A
    ClO -
  • B
    ClO2-
  • C
    ClO3-
  • Correct answer
    D
    ClO4-

Solution

We know that the species which undergoes oxidation as well as reduction during the chemical reaction then that reaction is called disproportionation reaction.

In ClO4-, the oxidation state of Cl atom is +7 which is the maxium oxidation state in which chlorine atom can exist, so it can just go to the lower oxidation state during the chemical reaction i.e. ClO4- can only undergo reduction and acts as only oxidising agent.

Thus, ClO4- does not undergo the oxidation that's why it can't show disproportionation reaction.

Hence, the correct answer is option: 'D'.
